USEFUL INFORMATION

1) Visa

Citizens of many countries will need a visa to enter the Russian Federation in 2019. Taking care about the visa in advance is recommended for citizens of China, Western European and North American countries, however this does not apply to visitors from the Middle East, Asia and South America since Russia has visa-free travel arrangements with most of these countries. Nevertheless, while planning the trip, please make all necessary enquiries to find out whether you will need an entry visa to Russia.

Please note that the decision on issuance of the visa takes up to 20 business days. This is to be accounted for during the visa application process, especially at the beginning of May, from May 1st to May 5th and from May 9th to May 12th, as most of the Russian agencies responsible for issuance of visas as well as Russian embassies/consulates in your country may be closed due to public holidays – the International Workers’ Day and Victory Day.

2) Money

The currency of the Russian Federation is the Russian Ruble (RUB)

In Moscow, cash transactions can be made in rubles only, but most of the offices, stores and restaurants accept credit card payments by Visa, Master Card and Union Pay.

The standards of Smart-Card, Android Pay and Apple Pay are also widespread in Russia. Access to the cards can be ensured by means of preinstalled Apple Wallet (Passbook) for iPhone and Android Wallet applications.

Currency exchange services are provided by banks and currency exchange offices. You can use ATM to get cash.

3) Weather

Mid-May is the best time of the year in Moscow. This is when it finally gets warm and all the plants come into bloom – the apple gardens, chestnut trees and the first blossoms of lilac, which makes for a pleasant and picturesque walk around Moscow. The hot weather characteristic of the summer months is not yet there. The usual daytime temperature for mid-May is 15-20°C, but the weather may be unpredictable. Some years, the temperature may go as far down as +5 or rise up to +25°C. While planning the trip, please see the weather forecast.

4) Transportation

  1. Public transport

The most popular means of transport in Moscow is the metro, however there are extensive bus, trolleybus and tram networks as well. All the city signs are transliterated using the Latin alphabet.

Troika Card

Troika card is a multipurpose travel card that can be used for all means of public transport. You can purchase the card at any metro station (at the cost of 50 rubles (~0.7 USD)) and refill it at the metro ticket offices or using ticket vending machines, automated kiosks of GUP “Mosgortrans” (located at some surface transport stops) or Aeroexpress ticket offices.

Troika card is contactless, and payments are made when you touch the card on the reader.

One metro ticket or surface transport ticket costs 38 rubles (~0.6 USD). There are no transport zones in Moscow, so the price of a trip is the same regardless of the distance or duration.

Single Tickets

You can purchase single tickets at the metro, automated kiosks or from the drivers of surface transport. The price of one single ticket is 55 rubles. A single ticket is valid within 5 days after purchase.

  1. Taxi

Moscow taxi services are highly developed. You can book a taxi on the phone and pay in cash rubles. Besides, you can book a taxi using a mobile application (Uber, YandexTaxi) and pay in cash or by credit card if it is added to your account in the application.
