I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) is the oldest, largest and leading medical university in Russia, being the successor of the Medical Department of Imperial Moscow University (IMU) founded on 25 January 1755 by the Imperial Edict of the Russian Empress Elizabeth I (currently, Lomonosov Moscow State University).
Many outstanding and internationally known figures of the Russian medicine studied, worked, founded schools of thought and taught future doctors in Sechenov University. Among them are the following great Russian doctors, who rose to international fame: N.I. Pirogov, N.V. Sklifosovskiy, I.M. Sechenov, S.S. Korsakov, A.P. Chekhov, R.S. Akchurin, V.I. Pokrovskiy, M.P. Konchalovskiy, A.L. Myasnikov, L.A. Bokeria.
At present, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University is the center of academic, scientific and resource standard within the Russian system of medical education.
The University provides a multilevel system of continuing higher education in the fields of Medicine and Pharmacy. Currently, Sechenov University consists of 4 departments and 15 institutes, which are subdivisions of the University (including 5 institutes of the Biomedical Science and Technology Park), as well as a foreign subsidiary located in Baku. Over 15 thousand students from all over the world study at the University. More than two thousand highly qualified specialists are employed by 140 sub-departments, 85% of the instructors being holders of doctorate degrees.
The University clinic has 3,000 beds, while the total bed space of the hospitals that admit our students amounts to more than 10,000 beds. The educational and medical activities of Sechenov University take place in the University clinics at Devich’e Pole, as well as in many large in-patient hospitals of Moscow.
I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University has a unique scientific medical library, which served as the base for creation of the first Federal Digital Medical Library in Russia.
The University has established Меntor Мedicus simulation clinic for practical training using training aids, manikins and simulators.
Sechenov University is a member of the International Association of Universities. Based on direct agreements and contracts, the University collaborates with the universities of the USA, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and others. Every year, the University sends more than 300 employees on missions abroad and accepts about 100 foreign specialists, active student exchange is in place.
I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University has been put on the reputable international Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019 according to the Times Higher Education (THE), established to determine the leading universities of the emerging economies.
